Productivity and Efficiency Indexes of the New Economy
The term "New Economy" refers to the recent trends of globalization,
enourmous investments in advanced IT-technology, knowledge driven "hacker-ethic", among other things. The fact is, goods and services have
become increasingly more intangible and difficult to quantify. This presents a considerable challenge for the measurement and analysis of
productivity and its components. On the other hand, the new business opportunities offered by the New Economy – e.g. rapid technological
progress, higher and invariable quality of goods and services, and economies of scale and of specialization – present further challenges for the
measurement of productivity and analyzing its components. The objective of the project is to develope the theory and the methodology of
productivity and efficiency analysis to better suit this new economic environment. The empirical phase of this sub-project will pay special
attention to the economic analysis of technological regime shifts as a means to achieve sustainable development.
